The Eleven O’Clock Toast

At every meeting of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and at every social function, when the hour of 11:00 p.m. tolls, the Lodge conducts a cherished ritual known as the “Eleven O’Clock Toast.” The clock striking the eleventh hour is part of the B.P.O.E. official emblem, positioned directly behind the elk’s head at the heart of our Order’s seal.

Regular meetings of Subordinate Lodges were traditionally held at night—often on Sunday evenings in the early years—and usually concluded near eleven o’clock. As the Brothers departed, they would ask after absent members and express concern for the causes of their absence.

In time, it became customary for a member to propose a toast to those not present. This practice grew until, wherever Elks gathered at the eleventh hour, it was observed in unison. Eventually, the Grand Lodge formally provided for this ceremonial during Lodge sessions, naming it the “Eleven O’Clock Toast.”

Under this provision, whenever a Lodge is in session at that hour, the regular order of business is briefly suspended while the Exalted Ruler recites the ritual, concluding with the solemn words:

“To our absent Brothers.”

Since 1995, when women were welcomed into Elkdom, the toast has been updated to honor all who serve within the Order:

“To our absent Members.”
